Swore off house rules for 8 years, then a 3 hour game of Monopoly at Thanksgiving broke me
I used to be the guy who read the rulebook cover to cover before anyone touched a piece and would not budge on anything, no matter how much fun we were losing. Then at my parents' place in Grand Rapids over Thanksgiving, we hit hour 3 of a Monopoly game with my niece and nephew, and my brother in law quietly slid the Free Parking house rule back in so the kids would not quit. Something clicked. I watched my niece actually buy her first property and do the little victory fist pump, and I realized nobody at that table cared that we were playing "wrong" by tournament rules. The strict version was technically right and also miserable. I still flinch when someone tries to house rule Twilight Imperium, but I have learned to pick my battles. Where do you all draw the line between playing it right and just wanting people to have a good time?
