That guy at the game store swore the 5 player expansion for Splendor was a must buy

I dropped $25 on it and now nobody wants to play because the turns take forever and the board feels cramped, anyone else regret a purchase their local store pushed on them?

My buddy Tim bought Munchkin's expansion because the clerk hyped it up. Now it sits on his shelf unfinished, nobody has the patience for three hour games anymore.

I had the same thing with a game store guy pushing the King of Tokyo expansion. Sold it and used the money to buy Azul instead, way better for game night. Sometimes the hype man is just trying to clear shelf space.

Give it another try with the right group, Splendor is a solid game that shines with the right pace. The base game is already tight and fast, so piling on players does stretch things out. I’d stick with the 4-player standard and enjoy the cleaner flow instead.
