That one night of Catan when I realized I was hoarding resources wrong for 6 years

So I've been playing Settlers of Catan since college, like 6 years now. I always thought the optimal move was to hoard as many resources as possible and never trade unless I was getting a crazy deal. Last month at a game night in my buddy's basement in Denver, this quiet guy who never wins just casually said "you know you're supposed to spend down to zero every turn, right?" I laughed it off but then he showed me the math - by sitting on 7 cards I was just begging for the robber to hit me, plus I was missing out on massive development card potential. It hit me that my whole strategy was based on this fear of losing stuff instead of actually advancing the game. Now I trade almost every turn even if it's a so-so deal and my win rate went from like 20% to almost half. Has anyone else had that one rule or strategy they totally misinterpreted for way too long?

...and that's exactly how I was with Monopoly for years. I thought holding onto all my money made me look powerful on the board. But my cousin finally pointed out I was just a sitting duck with a bunch of cash while everyone else was building houses and hotels. Now I spend every dollar as soon as I land on something, even if it's a random yellow property I'll never complete. Funny how we get stuck in these patterns from fear of losing instead of actually playing to win, right?

@rubysingh I really feel you on that "fear of losing" thing. It's wild how we convince ourselves that playing it safe is the smart move, when really it just traps us in place. I did the same thing for years, hoarding cash like it was gonna earn me interest or something. Once I finally started spending freely and buying up every property I could, the game actually got fun instead of stressful. Good on you for breaking that cycle, it takes a lot of honesty to admit when your own strategy is working against you.

random yellow property" is the move though. People sleep on the strategy of buying everything because it gives you trade bait later. I've traded three random yellows for a monopoly where the other guy needed just one to finish. Hoarding cash makes you a target, not a winner.
