Took me 8 game nights to realize I was shuffling backwards
We always split the deck into two halves and riffle shuffle, standard stuff. But I was doing it face down and never noticed until my buddy Dave pointed out that my cards were landing facedown on the table every single time. He laughed and said, why are you shuffling like a magician hiding a trick. I thought that was just how everyone did it. Then he showed me that most folks keep the faces toward them, so they can see the back pattern and keep the deck even. Now I flip mine and the splits are way cleaner, no more bent corners. Has anyone else had a basic move they did backward for years without clueing in?

Oh yeah, I did the same thing for years. I always dealt cards picture side up and never thought twice about which direction I was shuffling. One night my buddy's dad watched me and said I was making it harder on myself by not keeping the backs visible. He showed me to hold both halves so I could see the pattern on the back and it made a huge difference. Now I check my grip before every shuffle, it feels silly but it saves me from folded cards and messy piles.
