Took my game group to Gen Con and realized I've been playing Terraforming Mars wrong for 2 years
I was at a pickup game of Terraforming Mars at Gen Con last August and some guy watched me play and pointed out I'd been using the wrong turn order for generations. Turns out I skipped the whole research phase every round because I misread the rules back when I bought it in 2023. Has anyone else found out they've been butchering a game's rules after playing it for months?

The starving farmers thing kills me every time I hear it. Our group played Catan for six months before someone realized you can't trade with the bank for free, and we wondered why resources felt so abundant. Rulebook mistakes are basically a rite of passage at this point.

Wait have you checked if you were also doing the placement bonuses wrong? I read a huge thread on BoardGameGeek a while back where people were admitting they forgot to place the ocean tiles when they play special cards. That was wild. But honestly the research phase screwup is pretty common from what I've seen. I remember hearing about a couple who played Agricola for a whole year without realizing you're supposed to feed your people every harvest. They just let them starve and wondered why the game felt so easy. It happens to everyone at some point.
