Bought a $65 laser thermometer to check my boiler temp, got a different answer than the gauge
Picked one up at Harbor Freight in Tulsa three weeks ago to double check a 150 psi unit, and the laser read 40 degrees higher than the panel gauge right at the sight glass. Turns out I'd been trusting a gauge that was off the entire time, so now I shoot every drum before I pull a reading. Anybody else find their panel gauges drifting like that, or did I just get a bad one?

That 40 degree gap might just be you reading the wrong spot, since laser thermometers need a clean line of sight and a known surface to give you anything close to real (shiny pipe and steam around a sight glass will throw it off every time). A panel gauge that's off by 40 on a 150 psi unit would usually show up way before three weeks, so the odds are your $65 toy is the one lying to you, not the gauge that's been sitting there for years. Before you start shooting every drum on site, get a known temp to check against, like an ice bath or a pot of boiling water, and see which one is actually full of it.
