Had a bad weld repair fail twice on me in Cleveland, third time stuck
Been at this 9 years. Last month a customer brought in a pressure vessel patch that a younger guy had welded. First time I tried to fix it, my bevel prep was too shallow and it wormholed right down the middle. Grinded it out, did it again with a 60 degree bevel and preheat. Failed again at the toe. Third attempt I scraped all the old filler clean, ran a fresh root pass with the wire speed turned down, and it finally held up to the 150 psi hydro test. Felt like I forgot how to read a puddle for a minute there. Anyone else had a simple patch fight them for half a shift and then figure out it was something dumb like dirty base metal?
