Had a flange weld fail on a boiler in a Kansas City plant last winter

It was a 12 inch steam line flange on a 300 psi boiler, and the root pass cracked after a cold snap. We were doing a pressure test and heard the hiss. I shut the system down, cut out the bad section with a torch, and preheated the new piece to 250 degrees before welding it back in. The cold metal from the warehouse was the problem, it caused too much stress. Anyone else run into issues with cold weather and high pressure welds?

My buddy watched a whole pipe section split open like a zipper last January.

Oof, that sounds like a brutal fix. Cold metal is a NIGHTMARE for that exact reason.

A little heat from a torch can work wonders.
