Had a foreman tell me I was wasting time with my fit-up routine
He showed me how he docks a 30-inch header in 2 minutes flat by skipping the clamps and just tacking hot, and now I've cut a full hour off my morning lineup on this Idaho ethanol job - has anyone else had to unlearn their training to keep up with the old dogs?

That skipping the clamps and just tacking hot" bit got me good lol. I spent my first year in a pipe shop following every step in the book, and this old timer shows me he's been using a 4-foot level as a straightedge and just welding it up. Felt like an idiot but hey, it works.

Oh man, nothing like learning the shortcuts after you've already done it the hard way.

Funny how that works with almost everything though. You learn the "proper" way from someone who learned from someone else, then you figure out the real shortcuts by watching the old timers who just got tired of all the extra steps. It's like cooking recipes my grandma passed down - she wrote down all these elaborate steps but never mentioned you can skip half of them if you just know what the dough is supposed to feel like.
