Pro tip: using a soapstone marker on wet metal saved my layout today

I was laying out a saddle cut on a 12" pipe and kept losing my line with a felt marker cause the pipe was damp. Switched to a soapstone and the line held perfect even after wiping it down. Has anyone else had better luck with soapstone on damp surfaces?

Wait, has nobody stopped to think about how that felt marker's ink actually AFFECTS the metal over time? I used a Sharpie on some aluminum flashing once and a year later the ink had actually eaten through the coating and left this weird pitting. Soapstone is way safer for metal surfaces because it doesn't have any solvents or chemicals that could react. Plus if you're marking something you're gonna weld later, you definitely don't want felt ink residues burning into the joint.

Soapstone on damp pipe is the only way I'll do it now.
