That $120 'heavy duty' welding helmet I bought off Amazon was a total dud

Bought a budget auto-darkening hood off Amazon for $120 thinking I was smart saving cash. First real job on a 3/8 plate in the shop, the lens flickered so bad I couldn't see my puddle. Anyone else get burned by cheap gear or am I just unlucky?

People think spending less upfront means you're winning, but half the time you're just paying for the lesson later. It's like buying those cheap boots that fall apart in three months or that fitness blender that burns out on the first smoothie. You end up spending the money anyway, plus the headache. Sometimes getting burned is the only way you learn to look for real quality instead of just a low price.

Man I had a buddy who bought a cheap $40 angle grinder and it literally caught fire during his first cut. He spent more time fighting the thing than actually welding.
