A 12 year old at my library book club made me rethink annotations

Honestly, I was at our monthly meeting last Tuesday and this kid, maybe 12, said she draws little maps in the margins of fantasy books to track where characters go. It hit me different because I've been highlighting quotes for 5 years and never once thought about spatial stuff. She showed me her copy of The Hobbit and the margins were full of arrows and tiny mountains. Now I'm trying it with a dense nonfiction I'm reading and it actually helps me remember the timeline better. Has anyone else tried a weird annotation method that stuck with you?
