A librarian in Boise saved our club from a 2 hour fight over unreliable narrator books
We were about to pick our next read and half the group wanted Gone Girl style twist books while the other half said they were gimmicks. The librarian at the Boise branch pulled a list of 6 titles where the narrator is clearly lying but the author leaves clues, and she marked which ones work for group talks. We used her list and nobody argued once. Does your club have a trick for picking books that keep both the twist lovers and the lit fic people happy?
Check if your library has book club kits, like actual bags with 10 copies and discussion questions inside. Ours does and the kit list is already sorted by mood, so you can grab a twisty one and a quiet lit fic one in the same trip and let people pick based on the sample chapter. That part matters more than people admit, since the Gone Girl crowd usually bails on a slow opener but the lit fic folks get annoyed by a hook that goes nowhere. Reading the first page out loud at the meeting settles it fast. Boise sounds like they have their act together though.
