DAE remember when book club picks were just whatever the loudest member wanted?
Our group of 9 used to let whoever talked first pick the book, which meant 3 straight months of thrillers nobody finished. Now we each put 2 titles in a hat at the start of the season and draw them out, and our last pick was a 1970s cooking memoir that got the best talk we've had. How does your group settle on picks without it turning into a fight?
Nine people drawing two titles each means eighteen books in the hat, and that sounds like a lottery where the boring picks pile up. Our group of six tried a rotation where each person got one pick per season, and it went fine until Dave kept choosing 800 page war histories. The fix was a rule that the picker has to say why they want it in two sentences. If it's just "I heard it's good," we vote it down. That keeps the loud talker from running things without making it a big production.
