Defending a book I hated just because I picked it for book club

Last month I chose a literary novel for our group, something with dense prose and zero plot. Everyone else disliked it too, but I kept arguing it was brilliant because I felt embarrassed for picking it. Then one member asked if I actually enjoyed reading it, and I admitted I had skipped 40 pages just to finish. I stopped defending it and we spent the night joking about how pretentious the author was. Anyone else ever get stuck defending a bad pick just to save face?
