Does a book club need a leader or should we just let it drift? Our Nashville group split on it

Last month at our Nashville book club, we argued for almost an hour over whether to keep a rotating host or assign one person to run every meeting. Three members quit over it, saying the free-for-all style lets side chats take over, but the rest of us liked that anyone can jump in. I've seen structured groups in Chicago fall apart because one person dominated the picks, yet ours feels aimless now. Has anyone else dealt with this split, and what compromise actually worked for your group?
