Graphic audio vs plain text changed how our club handles dense books

Our club did a side-by-side of the first chapter of 'The Count of Monte Cristo' last month, one read aloud the regular way and one using a graphic audio sample. The people who got the sound effects and voice actors actually remembered who was who, without needing the character list every five pages. Has anyone else tried mixing formats mid-discussion to help the slower readers keep up?
