I realized I'd been reading our book club picks all wrong for a year

Our group read 'The Overstory' last month, and I kept getting mad at the slow plot. Then my friend Mike said, 'You're reading for story, but this book is about the ideas.' I went back and just focused on the themes about trees for a whole chapter. It clicked. Has anyone else had to totally switch how they read a book for the group?

Yeah, that's the only way some books work.

Wait you read a WHOLE CHAPTER just about trees? That's wild, man. I would have given up after like two pages of bark descriptions.

My buddy got super into this one book about old forests, and the author spent like thirty pages just on different kinds of moss. He said it was boring at first, but then he started noticing moss everywhere in real life, on walls and sidewalks. Kinda changed how he saw things, even if it was a slog to get through.
