Our book club pick fell apart 20 minutes in because nobody checked the sequel order and I had to lead a meeting with zero notes
Two weeks ago our group voted 7 to 2 for a book we thought was a standalone, and it turned out to be book three in a series none of us had read. I showed up to the Tuesday meeting at the cafe on Grand with a page of notes on characters who had clearly already been through a war I never saw. The first person to talk spent five minutes confused about a funeral scene because she thought the dead guy was the main character from chapter one. By minute twenty, half the table was on their phones trying to figure out reading order and the other half was arguing about whether spoilers even count if you skipped the first two. I ended up tossing my notes and running the whole thing as a free for all about pacing, which is not what anyone signed up for. We lost two members before the next pick, and one of them messaged me saying she felt dumb for not knowing it was a series. Now we have a rule that whoever suggests a book has to say out loud if it is part of a series, and I still feel bad about how that night went. Has this happened to your club, and how do you handle a pick that quietly turns out to be book three?
