Our group read a book with a really unlikeable main character last month
We argued for an hour about whether you need to like a character to enjoy a book. One person in our Denver club said they stopped reading after chapter three because they couldn't stand her. Has your club ever split over something like that?

Honestly, book clubs are just fancy FIGHT clubs with snacks. We nearly had a mutiny over some whiny Victorian guy last year. People were ready to throw the book out the window. If you need to LIKE every character, just read a phone book, it's full of nice, quiet people. The messy ones make for a better argument, and that's half the fun.

Oh that argument about needing to like a character is so familiar. My old book club totally fell apart over a book where everyone hated the main guy. Some people just couldn't get past it, and the meeting got really tense. It's tough when a character just grates on you that much.

Ugh, that sounds so frustrating. I've seen book clubs get totally derailed over one unlikeable character too. It really can ruin the whole book for some people.
