PSA: Our club's debate about 'The Road' got way too heated last Tuesday when Mark said he'd 'gladly take the cart' from the man in the book.

That single comment from Mark about Cormac McCarthy's novel basically split our 12-person group into two arguing camps for the entire 2-hour meeting, and now we're scrambling to pick a lighter book for next month... has anyone else had a debate derail a meeting this badly?

Our club had a similar blow-up over that exact scene, like five people almost walked out. I mean janarivera has a point that the book is meant to push you, but man, you gotta read a cozy mystery after that just to reset.

Honestly, that's the exact kind of debate that makes a book club worth having. McCarthy puts you in an impossible spot on purpose to make you ask those hard questions. The fact it blew up means the book did its job. Picking a lighter book next feels like a bit of a cop-out.

Totally get wanting to keep the tough talks going. My old club read "The Road" and half the group just stopped showing up after. Sometimes you need a breather book to let people cool off and come back.
