Question about the controversial ending we all hated, now I think it works

Our club picked a novel with a divisive finale last month and I was ready to trash it, but after our Tuesday discussion where someone pointed out the narrator's unreliable timeline, I actually caught the foreshadowing on a quick reread (took me 2 hours). Has anyone else flip-flopped on a book's ending after talking it out, or is my group just weirdly convincing?

Tuesday discussion" got me too, my book club spent an hour arguing about the tomato plant symbolism until someone realized the author just liked tomatoes (a red herring, literally). Now I'm convinced endings are 50% what you bring to the table, 50% what the writer left on the stove.
