Rant: our club went from hating a 700 page book to loving it in 4 weeks
We picked Wolf Hall for our March meetup at Rebecca's place in Portland and week one was rough, only 3 of us finished the first 100 pages and two people flat out said they wanted to quit. Then Sarah suggested we read it out loud for 20 minutes each meeting before we talked, and by week four all 9 of us finished it and we had our best talk in 2 years. I think hearing the dialogue made the tricky parts click way better. Has anyone else tried reading aloud to save a book the group was about to toss?
I used to roll my eyes at that idea, honestly. Felt like reading out loud was for kids or audiobooks for long drives, not for a real book club. But we hit the same wall with a dense book last year, half the group bailed, and someone finally said fine, just read the first chapter out loud. The difference was nuts. Hearing Cromwell's voice and the back and forth in Wolf Hall type stuff makes the names and pronouns stop tripping you up. I was wrong about it.
