Serious question, has anyone else's book club gotten totally derailed by one person's strong opinion on a character?
We were discussing 'The Goldfinch' last week and a member spent 45 minutes arguing Boris was the real hero, which completely shifted the whole group's focus from the plot. How do you gently steer things back without shutting down passionate readers?

That Boris debate reminds me of the time my friend argued Gollum was the true victim in Lord of the Rings.

Honestly that's a wild take but I kinda get it. Like @dakota194 said it was an addiction, but the ring also totally warped his mind over centuries. Dude was just a regular hobbit once. The real tragedy is nobody even tried to help him, they just wanted to use him or kill him. He never stood a chance.

Wasn't Gollum's real problem just a really bad ring addiction?
