Showerthought: I finally got my book club to read a book I picked after 3 meetings of just nodding along.

We read 'The Overstory' last month and for once, our whole 2-hour debate actually stayed on the book's themes instead of veering into gossip about someone's cousin.

Honestly, my old HOA meetings were like that. We'd start talking about trash pickup and end up in a 45 minute argument about someone's lawn gnome. It takes one solid topic, like your book choice, to actually keep people focused. Tbh most group chats die because nobody can stick to the point. You finally got the magic formula.

That lawn gnome thing is so real. My friend's neighborhood group once spent two hours fighting over whether a plastic flamingo was "art" or "garden litter." It's wild how one small thing can just completely hijack the whole conversation.

Seriously, the trick is having someone willing to shut down the side rants. Once that flamingo debate starts, you need a "moving on" person or it's game over.
