That 'classic' everyone raves about? I finally read it and it was garbage

My book club picked To Kill a Mockingbird last month and I went in totally expecting to love it like everyone else does. I was skeptical about the hype but figured hey, it's a classic for a reason. By page 150 I was checking how many pages were left. The pacing dragged so bad and the courtroom part felt like it went on forever. I told my group I thought it was overrated and three people got legit mad at me. Am I the only one who thinks this book is not all that?

Hold up, has anyone actually talked about how the book basically paints this perfect white savior narrative where Atticus is the hero but the Black community is just this quiet, suffering backdrop? It bugs me that people call it progressive when it's really just about making white readers feel good about themselves. The whole story centers a white family and a white lawyer while the actual Black experience is just window dressing.

Ugh, I know exactly what you mean. I had the same reaction when I read it - that trial section just draaaaaagged on and I was so bored. And honestly, Scout's whole "aww shucks" thing got old fast for me. You're not crazy, this book is just okay.
