That moment I realized I’d been reading book club picks all wrong for 5 years

Last month at our group in Portland, someone pointed out I kept recommending books based on plot summaries instead of character depth. I felt stupid because I’d been doing that since I joined back in 2019. Turns out our club debates always boiled down to how a person changes, not what happens to them. Has anyone else had a book club wake-up call where you realized you were missing the whole point?

Huh, that's actually pretty interesting. I wonder if your club has been secretly reading character-driven books and you just didn't notice because you were focused on the wrong thing the whole time.

Honestly that would be the most on-brand thing for my club to do. I'd believe it though because last month we spent forty five minutes arguing about whether the main character's coffee order said something about her personality, completely missing that there was a whole subplot about a missing dog. And then there was that time someone brought up how the author described the sunset and we went on a tangent about how it reminded us of a bad breakup. Plot? Never heard of her. We probably read a whole character drama without even realizing it.

Wait, you seriously never noticed they only talked about feelings and character flaws?
