Had a moment last week where I realized I was dog-earing pages all wrong

I've been folding down page corners in my paperback thrillers for years until a friend at the Nashville library swap said it damages the spine and makes pages fall out faster - she showed me her copy of a Lee Child book from 2015 that still looks new because she uses those little sticky flags instead. Now I'm wondering if I wrecked my whole collection of James Patterson novels from the 2000s with that habit. What do you use to mark spots in books without ruining them?

Sticky flags saved my books too, game changer for sure.

Wait, don't sticky flags leave little bits of glue residue that attract dust and grime over time... @riley43 is right they're better than dog-ears but I've got books from the 90s with folded corners that are still holding up fine.
