Secondhand book with missing chapters turned into a scavenger hunt

Bought a mystery novel from a thrift store in Tulsa last month for $2. The middle 40 pages were just gone, like someone ripped them out. I still read it, made up my own endings for the gap, and then found a library copy to compare. Honestly, my version was better. Has anyone else dealt with a damaged trade book that ended up improving the story?

I heard a radio segment once about how some old books have printer mistakes that turn them into collector's items, so your missing pages might actually be worth something to the right person. That's a wild thought, but it makes me wonder if the publisher ever sold a batch like that on purpose, you know, as a gimmick. Either way, your version probably had better pacing anyway, since you had to fill in the blanks yourself.

crazy, my buddy found a misprinted sports almanac and sold it for like 500 bucks.
