Wasted $45 on a used paperback set at a garage sale in Amarillo, spines fell apart by book 2
Stopped at a garage sale off Georgia Street in Amarillo and grabbed a full 6 book fantasy series for $45 because the lady said her son barely read them. Got home and by the second book the spine cracked and pages started falling out, turns out they sat in a damp garage for who knows how long. Anyone got a trick for spotting water damage on used books before you hand over cash?
Forty five bucks for a six book set is still way cheaper than buying them new, and every used book is a gamble you sign up for when you hand over cash. Honestly a cracked spine on book two is just the risk you take with garage sale paperbacks, damp garage or not, and the lady probably wasn't lying about her son. Next time flip to the middle and smell the pages, but I'd say you still came out ahead.
