Losing 60 bucks on a grain cutter I never use

Back in March I bought one of those fancy grain cutters for decorating covers, thought it would make my life easier. Paid 60 dollars for it at a craft fair in Portland, plus the extra blades. Tried it once on a leather journal cover and it slipped, tore the leather, and I haven't touched it since. The blades are these tiny curved things that dull after one use and cost 12 dollars each to replace. I could have just used a regular xacto and a ruler, which I already had. Anyone else got a tool sitting in a drawer that sounded great but turned out to be a total waste? How do you talk yourself out of buying the next shiny thing?

Damn, bought a fancy tape measure that speaks measurements. Still use my eyes.
