My first real binding mentor told me something I still think about 20 years later
He was an old German bookbinder named Hans who worked out of a dusty shop in Portland and after watching me struggle with a rounded spine for the fourth time he just said 'the book tells you what it wants, you just have to listen' and I have never looked at a text block the same way since.

Huh, did you ever roll your eyes at stuff like that before you actually got it? I used to think that kind of talk was just old-timers being mystical about glue and paper. But after fighting with enough bindings that just refused to come together right, I finally had to admit he was onto something.

Totally agree, that moment of realization hits hard.

Did it take one specific bad binding day for you, or was it more of a slow burn?
