My old mentor in Baltimore said glue pots are dead, and I can't tell if he's right
Had coffee with Ray last week, a guy who ran a bindery on Howard St for 22 years, and he said nobody under 40 should bother learning to cook hide glue because PVA and heat-set tissue do it all faster. It hit different because I just finished a batch of 12 books where the PVA lifted the headbands and I had to redo them. Part of me thinks he's stuck in the past, and part of me thinks he watched the trade shift and I haven't caught up. Curious where people land: is learning traditional glue work still worth the time, or is it a hobby thing now?
