Rant: my bone folder snapped 3 signatures into a rebind and I taped it
Was working on a leather rebind at my kitchen table in Portland last week and the cheap folder just gave out mid-crease, so I wrapped it in painter's tape and finished the book anyway. It held fine but now I'm wondering if I should just get a real teflon one or if tape is good enough, anyone else ever half-ass a tool repair and have it work out?
Did the tape hold up on the edge where you do the most creasing? I did the same thing with a cheap plastic folder about two years ago, wrapped the split in duct tape and kept going. It got me through four more books before the tape started peeling. What worked for me was taping it tight and then rubbing a little wax on the taped edge so it would slide instead of grabbing the paper. That folder still lives in my drawer as a backup. If yours is holding fine, I would just keep using it until it quits for real.
