Saw someone repair a hinge with book cloth, why didn't I think of that?

Was at a workshop in Portland last Saturday. This older binder had a textbook with the hinge completely torn off. Never reached for tape. Cut a strip of book cloth, glued it right over the joint. Held it in place with bone folder pressure. Looked clean, flexed fine, no bubbles. I've been using tape for years for quick fixes. Felt dumb watching it. Anyone else tried cloth strips for hinge repair instead of tape?
