Sifting through a box of old bookcloth scraps showed me how clever we used to be

Tbh, making do with what you had built a different kind of skill compared to now.

Calling it 'clever' might be overstating it. We used scraps because we had to, not because we were smarter. Today's problems need just as much smart thinking, just in different areas like tech or being green. It's not that one skill set is better, they're just products of their time.

Spot on. They fixed stuff, we just toss it.

Isn't it funny how fixing things has become a hobby now instead of just what you did? I see it with people buying old tools to restore, like it's a special skill instead of basic know-how. That shift is exactly what @harpery47 means about just tossing stuff today.
