That time my headband press decided to quit mid-run in my garage shop

Honestly, I was finishing a custom leather journal for a client in Austin. I had the cover clamped in the press, ready to stamp the title. Then the heating element just died, no warning. The press was cold, and the client needed it in three days. I ended up taking the whole unit apart on my bench. Found a loose wire connection near the thermostat. I had to strip the wire, re-solder it, and put it all back together. It took about two hours, but it fired right up after that. Has anyone else had a press fail like that, and what was your quick fix?

That's just how it goes with gear, always failing right when you need it most.

My buddy's van died mid-delivery last week.

Man, that loose wire thing is a classic. My old press did the same thing last year, just went cold during a big order. Like @perry.fiona said, it always happens at the worst time. I had to check every connection with a multimeter, and it turned out to be a bad solder joint on the main power lead. A quick re-solder with some fresh flux and it was good to go. It's worth keeping a multimeter and a soldering iron on hand just for these little emergencies.
