Tried wetting the spine with a sponge instead of a brush

I've been binding for about 12 years now and always used a brush for the spine glue. Last week I grabbed a damp sponge out of frustration because my brush was crusted up. The glue went on way smoother and I didn't waste any. Has anyone else tried different applicators for the spine and noticed a difference?

That's like saying you prefer eating soup with a screwdriver because your spoon was dirty. Just clean your brush, my dude. It takes thirty seconds. But hey, if you're determined to reinvent the wheel with a sponge, more power to you. Maybe next time try a washcloth or a squeegee or a turkey baster, see how that goes.

Been doing bookbinding for a while and I gotta say I'm not a fan of the sponge method. Sponges hold onto too much moisture and you lose control over how wet the spine gets. With a brush you can really work the glue into the mull and the signatures. Sponge just kinda smooshes it on there. Plus I've seen sponges leave little fibers behind if they start breaking down, which is annoying to pick out later. If your brush is crusty just soak it in warm water for a few minutes, it'll be good as new.
