Turned out the old guy at the bindery was right about my sewing frame...

I was having trouble with my signatures slipping around on the sewing frame, so I asked this retired bookbinder named Frank who hangs out at the local shop. He told me to stop using those cheap metal clips and just use wooden pegs with a bit of wax on them. I thought he was being old fashioned and ignored him for like 3 weeks. Finally got frustrated enough to try it after ruining my 4th book block. Now everything stays put perfectly and I'm kicking myself for wasting that time. Has anyone else had a random tip from an older binder that actually worked way better than you expected?

Ha, the wooden pegs with wax thing. I had the exact same experience with an old timer who kept telling me to soak my tapes in wheat paste first. Ignored him for months. Finally caved and yeah, it worked like magic. Old guys like Frank know their stuff.

Honestly yeah, it's kinda wild how often the old school way of doing things turns out to be the best way. I've seen it with cooking too, like my grandma's no recipe, just eyeball it method always beats anything I find online. It's like all these modern shortcuts try to skip the step that actually makes the difference, but the old guys figured that out through pure trial and error. Makes you wonder what other simple stuff we're ignoring because it sounds too outdated lol. That wheat paste thing sounds like a total pain until you actually try it and realize it saves you time in the long run.
