Warning: I thought leather spine linings were overkill until my 3rd rebind fell apart
I used to skip the leather lining on spines and just glue the mull straight to the boards, then my copy of Moby Dick cracked at the hinge after 2 months of daily reading. I switched to a 1mm goatskin lining on the next 4 rebinds and they've all held up fine, even the one my kid drops constantly. Anyone here use a thinner leather or does 1mm seem right for a heavy book?

Man that Moby Dick cracking after 2 months stings, all that work down the drain. Been there with a cheap glue-up on a Thrift Store find and it split right at the hinge the first cold week. 1mm goatskin sounds about right to me for a heavy book, I've gone down to 0.8mm on smaller stuff and it still holds. Anything thinner than that and you're basically just gluing paper to the boards.
