Wasted $140 on a cheap heat press for book cloth covers

Bought a budget heat press off Amazon last month thinking it'd be fine for stamping book cloth. Big mistake. It heated unevenly, scorched two linen covers, and the temp dial was way off by like 20 degrees. Ended up having to redo a whole batch for a client order. Anyone else had luck with a specific mid-range press that actually holds steady temp or should I just stick to hand stamping? Looking at spending around $300 if it's worth it.

My first cheap press could barely toast bread evenly, so I feel your pain on that scorched cloth. I ended up grabbing a used mid-range model off a local buy/sell group and it's held temperature better than my own oven. If you can find one that's been gently used, that might stretch your $300 further than a brand new gamble.
