Wasted $140 on a cheap heat press for book cloth covers

I figured a budget heat press would save me time on book cloth covers for my journals. Big mistake... it heated unevenly and scorched the cloth on the edges while the middle barely stuck. I ruined 6 covers before I gave up and went back to my old iron and a pressing board. That was $140 down the drain plus the cost of the cloth I wrecked. Anyone else tried going the cheap route with heat tools and regretted it? What are you all using for cloth adhesion without a fancy press?

My cousin spent $200 on a mini glue gun setup for her scrapbooks and it melted through her kitchen table, so now she uses a flip flop as a heat barrier. Honestly, sometimes the janky old tools just win.
