Conversation with a park ranger made me see pruning differently

I was at the arboretum in Portland last Saturday and a ranger mentioned they never prune in late summer because it stresses the trees right before dormancy. That made me rethink all the trimming I did to my backyard maple back in August, and now I'm wondering if I should wait until early spring for the dogwood too. Has anyone else been told a pruning timeline that went against what they were doing for years?
