Dividing my overgrown hostas saved them from crowding out my daylilies

Last spring my backyard bed in Portland had hostas so thick the daylilies barely got any light, so I dug up the biggest clump and split it into 4 pieces with a shovel. I replanted the divisions with compost and watered them daily for 2 weeks, and now all 4 are thriving with way more flowers than before. Has anyone else tried splitting perennials this late in the season, or is early fall a better bet up north?
