Had to pick between saving a 60 year old oak or a brand new fence line last month

I chose the oak (cut fresh growth paths around the roots instead of trenching) and now the owner's mad the fence has a weird gap, but honestly the tree's looking better than ever - anyone else had to make a call like this between neighbors and roots?

Funny timing, I just finished patching a fence after the neighbor's dog figured out the old route under it. Guess he missed the shortcut we closed off. Roots 1, plans 0.

Absolutely, @seanjackson. I had an old oak come down on my property a few years back, turned it into some nice furniture, way better than any pine. Ever mill any of yours?
