Hit 200 unique plant species in my backyard last summer and I'm still shocked
I started cataloging everything growing in my half-acre lot back in March, not expecting much. By July I had logged 87 species, but then August rolled around and suddenly I was at 156 after the rains came. A local botany club member told me my count was 'absurdly high for a suburban plot' and that got me thinking. Some folks say you should focus on native plants only and ignore the rest, others say count everything for a full picture. Which side do you lean on for your own yard lists? Has anyone else hit a surprise number like that?

End of July I hit 145 on my lot and was convinced the botany club people were messing with me. @matthewmartin has the right idea, count everything first then sort it out later. Keeps the list honest and you can always drop the non-natives when someone wants to argue.

Yeah that botany club advice is solid. I count everything too, just makes the list feel complete. Then if someone wants to argue about invasives I just pull out the native sub-list and let them sort themselves out.
