I figured my neighbor was nuts for putting coffee grounds on her roses

She said it keeps the bugs away and helps the soil, but I thought it was just old garden talk. My aphids got really bad this spring, so I tried it on two of my bushes as a test. After about three weeks, those two had way fewer bugs than the others. I still don't know the full science, but I'm adding my used grounds to the compost bin now. Has anyone else seen results with this, or is it just a fluke for certain plants?

Honestly I thought it was total nonsense too, like some weird gardening myth. I mean coffee grounds for roses? But my mom swore by it and her garden was always perfect, so I gave it a shot last year. It actually made a huge difference with the ants and those little green bugs, I forget the name. Now I save all my used grounds, it feels like free plant food.

Ugh, total waste of time for me. Made my soil weird and crusty. Just bought some actual bug spray instead.

That's interesting to hear it worked for you, @torres.grant. My experience was totally different though. Tried coffee grounds around my hydrangeas and it just made a slimy moldy mess on top of the soil. Maybe it depends on the type of plant or how much you use. Also read that it can make the soil too acidic for some things if you're not careful. I stick to regular compost now, seems more reliable.
