I used to think garden center sales were the best deal until a nursery owner in Portland told me the spring markups are fake

He showed me the actual wholesale tags comparing a '50 percent off' azalea to its real cost and I haven't touched a clearance rack since, has anyone else caught this trick at big box stores?

Whoa wait so the '50 percent off' is just a fake number they slap on top of a fake original price? That's messed up. I always figured the clearance rack was where they dumped stuff that was about to die anyway, but I never thought about the whole markup game. So the real question is, how do you even know what the actual wholesale cost is unless you have a buddy at a nursery? Are there apps or something that track these prices, or is it just a matter of knowing the local dirt? I'd love to hear more about what that wholesale tag actually looked like, because I'm probably still getting duped without even realizing it.

That loose soil mix has saved me more times than I can count. I used to kill everything because I'd overwater in heavy clay, but switching to a mix with perlite and bark made all the difference. A buddy at a local nursery showed me a cheap trick: grab a bag of cactus soil and mix it half and half with regular potting soil. It drains way faster and my plants actually live now. Do you find your plants do better with a specific soil type too?
