My $8 hand lens beats the $60 clip-on macro lens I bought for moss ID
I know the phone lens clips look slick in the videos, but after a year of trying to photograph moss with one, I went back to the cheap folding hand lens from the local nature center in Boise. The clip-on lens gives you a pretty picture and nothing else, because the depth of field is so thin you cannot see the whole leaf at once. Through the hand lens I can actually see the midrib and the way the leaves curl when they dry, which is what tells me the species. The photos look worse on my feed, but I learn more. Anyone else given up on phone lenses for close field work?
Doesn't it drive you nuts when the photo looks great but tells you nothing? I had the same problem, the thin focus band made every leaf a guessing game. Sticking with the hand lens was the right call, and learning to see the whole leaf is worth more than a pretty shot.
