My snake plant finally bloomed after 14 years, here is the trick

I had this snake plant my grandma gave me back in 2011 and it NEVER did anything except sit there. Last month I got fed up and moved it from the dark corner to a bright west window in my kitchen in Portland. I also stopped watering it on a schedule and only gave it a drink when the soil was totally dry, like bone dry for a week. About 3 weeks later I saw this tall green stalk shooting up and now it has these tiny white flowers that smell amazing at night. Has anyone else had a snake plant bloom, and did it change how you care for the others?
